Respirator Protective Equipment Fit Test
Respirator Protective Equipment (RPE) fit testing is required for employees wearing tight-fighting disposable or reusable respirators. This procedure helps ensure the user has selected the correct size respirator and that a seal against the face can be made to provide the expected protection when they are working on-site. Fit testing is available for respirators used at various sites including BHP, Sino Iron/Greatland, Telfer and more.
We provide Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT) using the AccuFit PRO system. This method of testing is precise as it measures the exact number of microscopic particles inside and outside the mask during the fit testing, producing a numerical score called a 'fit factor'. The system will determine a pass or fail result based on the type of mask being fit and the score. We can fit test for all types of tight-fitting respirators including N95 and disposable respirators as well as re-usable half and full-face respirators.
Models we currently test include 3M, ProSafe and Trident disposable masks, as well as 3M and Sundstrom half and full-face reusable respirators. Please contact us if you require a specific mask to be tested. Workers are able to bring their own model of disposable mask to be tested with the AccuFit machine. Please check with us regarding bringing in your own reusable masks to ensure we have the correct adaptors available.
Please ensure before your mask fit test that:
You have advised us of the mask required or mine site/worksite you are working at
You are clean-shaven, as facial hair can affect the effectiveness of the seal. AS/NZS1715 does not permit testing where facial hair or stubble may affect the seal of the mask to the face
You have not eaten or drunk anything except water 30 minutes before your test
That you have not smoked or vaped within 30 minutes before your test
This course can be delivered/assessed in the facility organised by the training provider.
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Typically a 1-2 day, blended program with online pre-learning and face-to-face practical assessments for full accreditation.
For individuals simply needing to get tested (not train as a tester), the procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes.Clean-Shaven: Attendees must be clean-shaven in the area where the respirator seals to the face (no stubble, beards, or moustaches). Stubble can reduce protection by up to 33%.
No Food/Drink/Smoking: Participants should not eat, drink (except plain water), smoke, or chew gum for at least 30 to 60 minutes prior to the test.
Medical Fitness: Attendees should be medically fit to wear a respirator.
Equipment: It is highly recommended to bring the specific make, model, and size of the respirator mask used in your workplace.Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
Combine theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on demonstrations to ensure compliance with occupational safety regulations.
Respirator or mask fit test certificates generally require renewal at least annually to ensure compliance with the AS/NZS 1715:2009 standards. This annual renewal applies to both disposable P2/N95 masks and reusable tight-fitting respirators.
