HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely – equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to safely perform manual tasks in the workplace, minimising the risk of injury to themselves and others. This unit is essential for workers across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, aged care, disability services, construction, and warehousing, where manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling are a regular part of the job.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to identify and assess risks associated with manual tasks, implement safe manual handling techniques, and use appropriate equipment to reduce physical strain. The training covers the importance of maintaining proper posture, using ergonomic principles, and following workplace health and safety (WHS) guidelines.

Participants will also develop skills in recognising unsafe practices, reporting hazards, and applying risk control measures to prevent workplace injuries.
Upon completing HLTWHS005, participants will be able to conduct manual tasks safely and confidently, helping to prevent injuries and promote a safer workplace. This training is essential for ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety regulations and fostering a culture of safety in manual task environments.

This course is suitable for anyone who performs manual tasks in their work, such as:
Healthcare workers
Aged care workers
Construction workers
Warehouse workers
Retail workers
Office workers

  • This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

  • Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

    Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours
    Blended Face to Face contact time of at least 3 Hours
    Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours
    Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 40 Mins

  • Sufficient English language, literacy, numeracy and visual interpretation skills to successfully complete the course

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

  • Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

    Performance tasks -

    Choose 3 scenarios from the scenario options list

    In relation to the scenarios, demonstrate each of the following for each of the scenarios:

    Identify a manual task involving risk
    Undertake risk assessment and complete a risk assessment form
    Prepare for the manual task
    Safely complete the manual task
    Documentation – Completion of a Discomfort Survey form and 3 x Risk Assessment forms.

    Theory assessment - A written exam consisting of multiple choice question and short answer questions to be completed at the end of the training session. The student must complete all questions.
